A wise person proportions their belief to the evidence
- "Of Miracles" David Hume, 1748
Piety is not what the lessons (of religion) bring to people, it's the mistake they bring to the lessons.
- John Oldman, from 'The Man from Earth' (2007)
Do not mistake passion, which can change its mind, for fundamentalism, which never will.
The true scientist, however passionately he may 'believe',
in evolution for example, knows exactly what would change his mind ...
evidence!
The fundamentalist knows that nothing will.
- Richard Dawkins
A lie gets halfway around the world before the truth has a chance to get its pants on.
- Winston Churchill
Rev Dr William Barry in 1886 wrote:Intellect throws each man back upon himself, into a solitude from which he looks out with absolutely strange eyes on society. And if the spectacle touches him, if it rouses interest and compassion, his feeling will be for those tender ones of the great human flock whom the shepherds shear, and starve, and sell, but do not feed.
Science breeds thought, strips off illusions, brings out the true and exact bearings of one thing upon another, makes it impossible to narrow one's convictions to party issues ...
The Social Sciences ... have enabled us to criticize with severity the haphazard, make-shift, and too often hopelessly unjust laws and institutions which are all that mankind has to show after its thousands of years upon earth.
The further the spiritual evolution of mankind advances,
the more certain it seems to me that the path to genuine religiosity
does not lie through the fear of life, and the fear of death, and blind faith
... but through striving after rational knowledge.
- Albert Einstein
On some positions, Cowardice asks the question, "Is it safe?"
Expediency asks the question, "Is it politic?"
And Vanity asks the question, "is it popular?"
But Conscience asks the question, "Is it right?"
And there comes a time when one must take a position that is neither safe, nor politic, nor popular, but one must do it because Conscience tells one it is right.”
― Martin Luther King, jr
All this was inspired by the principle - which is quite true within itself - that in the big lie there is always a certain force of credibility; because the broad masses of a nation are always more easily corrupted in the deeper strata of their emotional nature than consciously or voluntarily; and thus in the primitive simplicity of their minds they more readily fall victims to the big lie than the small lie, since they themselves often tell small lies in little matters but would be ashamed to resort to large-scale falsehoods.
It would never come into their heads to fabricate colossal untruths, and they would not believe that others could have the impudence to distort the truth so infamously.
Even though the facts which prove this to be so may be brought clearly to their minds, they will still doubt and waver and will continue to think that there may be some other explanation.
For the grossly impudent lie always leaves traces behind it, even after it has been nailed down, a fact which is known to all expert liars in this world and to all who conspire together in the art of lying.
- Adolf Hitler, Mein Kampf, vol. I, ch. X
“All men are born with a nose and ten fingers, but no one was born with a knowledge of God”

ex-l wrote:May I just point out ... in these quotes ... "knowledge" means knowledge. Not "The Knowledge™" as per the BKs.
Knowledge, and the pursuit of knowledge is a huge and wonderful thing without any doubt. If only the Brahma Kumaris had invested themselves in pursuing knowledge, rather than dumbing down individuals to build an intellectual prison for its slaves ... and pursue power and wealth instead ... then the world would be a better place.
In the Murlis, it is said, "a mouse found a grain of turmeric and opened a grocery store". That applies to the BKs and the amount of knowledge they really have ... except, of course, The Knowledge of how to scam millions of dollars, homes, jewellery and land out of 100,000s of people.
