Cult Awareness Couple's passion will be missed

Post08 Jun 2011

Couple's passion will be missed by Lester L. Washington, MA, M.ED., ABD

How many lives have you saved in your lifetime by exposing abuse, cults, hate crimes and/or discriminations around you? How many men, women, children and minority groups in America are free, alive and better off as a direct result of your assistance, job, communication or volunteer work with them or others?

In Hal Mansfield's case, we don't know how many lives he has saved or delivered to freedom. At times in life, we recognize people after they have moved, cannot comprehend the praise we express to them or have died, like so many teachers we have had in life.

As we approach June 18, or the Juneteenth Celebration, the release of African-Americans from the institution of the ungodly American institution of slavery, many Americans are still enslaved to self, ideas, habits and restrictions. You see, while many talk about the life of Dr. Martin Luther King and what he did, there are many people voluntarily working for us to have a better life.

The purpose of this Soapbox is to praise two living legends in Fort Collins, Hal Mansfield and Linda Benefiel, who have been voluntarily contributing to freeing people from themselves, ideas, slavery, abuse, discrimination, cults and hate for more than 30 years and have finally decided to "retire" and take care of their own family, health and needs.

Could you imagine someone in Fort Collins voluntarily fighting domestic terrorism, hate crimes, gangs, cults and other discriminatory practices in America for more than 30 years? They have received threats every day from people across the nation who would love to have his "head on a platter" as John the Baptist suffered. The Mansfields have uncovered, exposed, tracked, counseled, desensitized and reshaped individuals of every hue (white, black, red, yellow, brown and mixed) from hate groups, gangs and cults across the nation to promote diversity and acceptance of others.

Mansfield has not done this alone. In the midst of this, he has a supportive wife with restricted vision and family that envisioned a world that is far more beautiful than those of us who have wasted our sight. Some day, it will be here.

Another person has taken the job, but there is no true replacement for Hal Mansfield and Linda Benefiel in Fort Collins or the nation. They have received numerous accolades, but again, today, we salute them for fighting to erase the blight of "man's inhumanity against other men, women and children" and wish them well in their future endeavors as our friends forever.
