The word "Seance" came to be used specifically for a meeting of people who are gathered to receive messages from spirits, or to listen to a spirit medium discourse with or relay messages from spirits.
In the religion of spiritualism, it is generally a part of services to communicate with the dead. The term "seance" is not often used to describe this, except by outsiders, a preferred term is "receiving messages", as in the case of medium Gulzar of BKWSU, whose communication season with BK god is coming to Abu very soon.
In his T.V special "Seance", magician Derren Brown held a Seance and afterwards described some of the tricks used by him and 19th centuary mediums to create the illusion of paranormal events.
