Om Mandli Life Criticised: 1939 Sind Tribunal's Findings

Post08 Aug 2015

Plus ça change, plus c'est la même chose ... literally, “The more it changes, the more it's the same thing.”

Interesting footnote, who was "the principle male member" who had already left by this time?

The way the PBKs tell the story, Lekhraj Kirpalani's partner, the Shevakram character, left early out of disagreement with Lekhraj Kirpalani and his Krishna fantasy indulgences. I have no idea if this is one and the same.

Om Mandli Life Criticised

Sind Tribunal's Findings

Karachi, April 26

That the Om Mandli is an unhealthy institution whose doctrines are not conduceive to sound moral life among the young inmates is believed to the the unanimous conculsion of the tribunal appointed by the Sind Government. The members of the tribunal were Mr C. B. Lobo, Judicial Commissioner and Dewan Bahadur Kalumal, ex-Chief Judge of the Small Causes Court. Their report is under the consideration of Government.

The tribunal is understood to have expressed the opinion that the basis of the Mandli rests on half-baked ideas, crude principles and the alleged practise of hypnotism by the founder of the Mandli, Dad Lekhraj, which tended to weaken will-power and introduced a baneful form of psychological perversion among the young inmates.

Meanwhile, it is stated that one of the principle male members has already left the Mandli while another is shortly leaving.

- Associated Press.

At some point, clear minded BKs have to admit some fault of Lekhraj Kirpalani's and the Om Mandli's behaviour rather than lying back on the old "the rest of the world is evil" line.

Again, nothing changes ...
The Om Mandli, a spiritual and cultural institute, was started in 1935 by Bhai Lekhraj Kirpalani, His disciples mainly woman, and number about 300 ...

The Bhaibund (mercantile) community is determined to end the existence of the Om Mandli.

The community's main objections are that family life is undermined by the teachings of the Mandli, and, it is declared "Wives have gone on strike".

The Bhaibunds say that the religious discourses are not of a high level and that the women neglect their homes and children. There is little secular instruction except reading writing and arithmetic.

-- from Times of India, August 17 1938

Lekhraj Kirpalani's wealth was stated as being 400,000 Rupees. At the time, a sindiworker shop worker was being paid 360 Rs per year.

Something else came out of the old paper reports.

The Om Mandlite, like Om Radhe, were ask to attend the Tribunal but refused to do so.

They demanded to be allowed to use "pleaders" (advocates) on their behalf, and the Tribunal refused. Therefore, the Om Mandlites refuse to attend and speak.

Hardly straight shooting and standing by what you believed.
