Ludhiana, September 8, 2001

The Brahmkumari Ashram has claimed to have developed a drug for de-addiction with amazing results. Disclosing this here today, the local head of the ashram, Miss Rajkumari, said the drug would be introduced during the de-addiction camps to be organised within a week.

The ashram has embarked upon a massive campaign against the de-addiction. The Minister for Technical Education, Mr Jagdish Garcha who also addressed a press conference appreciated the concern shown by the ashram about the menace of drug addiction.

Quoting a survey which was ordered by the government, he revealed that 70 per cent of the children in schools in a particular area had been found to be addicted to one or the other type of addiction. Surprisingly, he said, 30 per cent girls had also been addicted to these drugs, and these figures were from rural schools.

The minister called upon various social and religious organisations to come forward to root out this menace from the state. He assured all support and cooperation to the Brahmkumari ashram in its mission against the drug addiction.

Mr Baldev Raj Sawhney, who has been associated with the Brahmkumari ashram for the past few decades, said that the wonder drug against addiction had been developed by a doctor couple practising homoeopathy system of medicine at the Brahmkumari ashram headquarters at Mount Abu in Rajthan.The drug had been developed after a prolonged research. He said that a team of 20 homoeopathic doctors was currently participating in a conference being organised at Mount Abu. These doctors will be able to tell in detail about the de-addiction drug.

Giving details of the drug, Prof Hardip Singh said that it is in the form of small tablets. Normally a person stops taking any type of drug after one dose. But sometimes additional doses are also required. The tablets are taken when a person feels the urge for the drug. There are different antidotes for liquor addiction, smoking or other addictions like chewing of tobacco or opium. However, Prof Singh clarified that the primary requirement for the treatment to succeed was that there must be an urge in a person that he or she wants to get rid of that addiction, whatsoever it maybe.

Wonderful news indeed! If it is true then they would certainly be candidates for Nobel Prize for Medicine and a lot of Government funding for the project/product. :D I wish them good luck.

Yes, it might be one for the good news topic. The headlines have been a bit quiet since 2001 though. Perhaps there is another story there ... or perhaps it was just another bit of PR from Karuna Shetty's office (usual United Nations waffle included). Although I am not sure it was ... earlier in the Tribute, the BK Sister also claimed;
NGO adopts 20 villages for de-addiction drive by Shivani Bhakoo
Ludhiana, August 22

With a view to curb drug addiction among the youth in Ludhiana district, the local branch of Prajapati Brahma Kumaris Ishwariya Vishwa Vidyalaya has adopted 20 villages to check drug addiction among the youth.

Known for promoting spirituality, the Brahmakumaris’ spokesperson, Behan B.K.Rajkumari, says that this is the first attempt to channelise the energies of the sect members for a social cause.

The local chapter of the vidyalaya, which hitherto taught divine qualities such as humility, tolerance, patience, contentment and sweetness, feels that it is as much their responsibility to eradicate drug menace in the region as anyone else’s. ‘‘Statistics show that 90 per cent of the drug abusers are below 25 years of age, which means that the ‘monster’ is mainly destroying the powers of youth, which is the most constructive, creative and productive period of life,’’ said Behan B.K.Rajkumari, head of the local chapter of vidyalaya.

The members of the vidyalaya believe that those who learn and practice the Godly knowledge and Raja Yoga taught by Brahmakumaris are able to come out of the vicious circle of the dependence on alcohol and other drugs in a short time. The few persons who are not able to concentrate, experience relaxation and change their belief systems need longer time to break the vicious circle.

The NGO has started its mission with an awareness campaign in about 20 villages of the district. Volunteers of the organisation, a doctor and social activists of the city, visit remote areas and spread awareness about drug abuse in a different manner. ‘‘We try to understand as to why one started abusing drugs. Majority of addicts get hooked to drugs due to mental stress, disturbed home, peer pressure, to show maturity and easy availability’’, said another volunteer of the organisation.

The members have found that majority of drug addicts demand more money from parents, spend more time in the toilet, come home late or are physically or behaviorally changed. The vidyalaya is run mostly by women, who are called behanjis and believe that meditation purifies one’s sanskaras, builds one’s character and gives many physical and spiritual benefits, mental relaxation and eliminates stress and negative thoughts.

She seems a good and practical sort.
