GURUS AND ENLIGHTENMENT
At present, a lot of things are going on in Guru-land. Many people return home in a disappointed state. They are disenchanted with the enlightenment. It was all so beautiful, and the light could actually be touched, and was so very near ... and then came the disillusionment.
I have been in a spiritual movement myself.
In the beginning, it was truly a revelation. I learned how to master my thoughts, and to totally quieten them. I learned to be in the silence…and to regard myself as just a soul, having a very personal contact with The Creator. It was a magnificent experience, and it has always remained so for me. Why? Because I had chosen to leave it at that. That which worked for me I allowed to stay and work for me. That what didn’t work for me I just let go. So it still remains a revelation for me.
Is a guru a danger or a lesson? I think it’s about the same as a lover who, later on in the relationship, turns out to be a disappointment. You are deeply in love… yes, that’s him, you get married, and after several years you discover that the treasure you once married is, alas, not the cherished prize you thought him to be. You also discover that you are not really yourself anymore, and that you conformed too much to the wishes and lifestyle of your partner. You are angry, and feel deceived. Afterwards, you come to the point when you realize that you have to get busy working on building your self-esteem. Ultimately, at the end, you emerge as a stronger, better person.
And so it is with the spiritual movements.
First, you learn that you are the master of your thoughts ... and then they teach you that you have to release your thoughts to God. There’s nothing wrong with that. That’s all right. Your Will be done ...
Unfortunately, the spiritual organization or guru decides what the Will of God is.
In reality, God’s Will is that where you yourself are open for, and what you yourself are open to receive. God’s Will is a very personal experience for each individual. Just open your intuition and your own window to God, and the answer will come all by itself.
Now this is on a totally different level than just asking one of the gurus whether you may be allowed to buy a washing-machine, or how you should cut your hair.
Once someone actually told me that God doesn’t like bangs (hair fringe), because he can’t see the third eye of those wearing them. If you conform to this utter nonsense, you are surrendering yourself to it.
And once you have crossed that line, you have also lost the feeling of being enlightened. Then fear takes over. “Oops, my hair is too long. What will they think of me?” Of course, in an organization which preaches love, the appearance of feelings of fear just isn’t right. These feelings of fear are a clear sign, just as, in a relationship, the feelings of fearing your partner are a clear sign. Something is fundamentally wrong with your self-esteem.
Often, people then blame the organization for having ruined their lives. But they have done it themselves. They have allowed it to happen to themselves. There’s nothing amiss with that ... we learn by trial and error. And don’t throw out the baby with the bath water! You have learned something beautiful. You have experienced yourself in a wonderful way. That is never lost. And, if you still remember how you once did it, you will be able to do it again.
So you know what works, and what doesn’t. Period.
If you start blaming yourself and regretting the experiences, you are actually hindering your own progress, and giving negativity a chance to move in. And, before you know it, you’ll be spiralling downward. So come to grips with your pain, and move onwards and upwards.
So we deceived ourselves. Of course there were moments of doubt. “Is this really all right?” And we didn’t want to see it. We closed our eyes, kept our mouths shut, and went on. Someone was humiliated in public, and we didn’t dare to say anything about it. These are, of course, signs that it is really over. The beauty is within you, and now is the time for you to go on.
This is similar to submitting yourself to your partner in a marriage. You yourself don’t make decisions anymore, and leave everything for your partner to decide. And after you finally choose to leave him, after years of not-being-yourself, you blame him for oppressing you.
This is, of course, a great Lesson of Life. We have done it ourselves. We have surrendered our power. Now the time has come to define our own boundaries and take responsibility for our own lives. And this time, we have a personal soul-contact with God.
I am still grateful to my organization for what I learned from it. I have no hard feelings at all, having reaped the numerous benefits.
A friend of mine, however, was furious. For years, fear prevented him from saying what he would have liked to say. He has no children, because at the time he was with the organization, he was celibate. It was his very own choice, and yet he blames the organization.
It’s a very tough lesson, isn’t it, to realize later on in life that you have surrendered yourself? Of course it is. But what a grand lesson it is, too!
No one can give us enlightenment, because we are Light in ourselves already. We just need to discover it anew.
