  • Spirituality and Men - Men constitute half the world's population; they own most of the world's wealth and occupy most of the official positions of power and authority, globally, nationally and locally. Consequently, they are playing a major role in the world - environmentally, politically, economically and socially. At this moment in time, things are getting out of hand as we face the consequences of living in a highly competitive and materialistic world where traditional roles and life styles are rapidly changing. Not surprisingly, men's near monopoly of power and the way they are using it, is being questioned and challenged and many men are confused and uncertain as to how to respond.
  • BKIS / Mike George Learn Meditation Website - The purpose of this website is to introduce you to two new resources for learning meditation - the book and the CD entitled In the Light of Meditation. The art of meditation is as old as recorded history. Meditation has been at the heart of living wisely, happily and harmoniously in many cultures for thousands of years. Today, it is like a lost art that is being rediscovered by many but practiced only by a few. In this now small, speedy and often superficial world it is no surprise that levels of personal stress and interpersonal conflict are on the rise. Perhaps this is why meditation has been making a comeback during these last two decades, as more of us seek ways to relax, rediscover the natural rhythms of life and, through the pursuit of enlightenment, try to understand both ourselves and our place in this world. The purpose of this new book and the accompanying CD is to introduce you to a new 10 lesson course in meditation. It is a course from which you can learn and practice meditation in your own time and at your own pace. It is a method of meditation that is currently practised each day by nearly half a million people world wide.

Men (brothers) do play roles - indeed the founder (Dada Lekhraj, later Brahma Baba) was a man - but the upper echelons comprise women. Possibly once a misogynist, Brahma Baba did this consciously to promote womanhood in India. Now based in Mt. Abu, Rajasthan, the BKs began in Hyderabad, Sind, and moved to Mt. Abu in the early 1950s. The organisation arrived in Australia in the late 1970s when a Gujarati sister established a small centre in Sydney.

This web site has no official affiliation with A.A. or any other 12 Step group. We strive only to act as another source for information and tools concerning 12 Step programs.

  • Dialogue Ireland - DIALOGUE IRELAND - An independent Trust promoting Awareness and Understanding of New Religious Movements and cultism at the service of the churches, religions and Irish society.
  • Dialog Center - What is the Dialog Center? The Dialog Center is the name of a nationwide network, founded as a result of the growth of New Religious Movements (NRMs) in Denmark and elsewhere. The purpose of the Dialog Center is to communicate the Christian faith to people of other beliefs and convictions in a dialog. In relation to the neo-religiosity, our intention is to realize a dialog in confrontation. We believe that these two concepts are inseparable, for a dialog without confrontation may easily turn into a conversation without depth or even into syncretism. On the other hand, confrontation without dialog may easily turn into conflict and arrogant rejection of the views of those we differ from.
  • WHAT TO DO IF A FRIEND OR LOVED-ONE JOINS A CULT - This material is a summary of personal conversations with three exit-counsellors. It is a FAQ in that it answers a question that myself and many openly anti-cult people are frequently asked: I am worried about a work colleague/friend/parent/child who is showing interest/deeply involved in an organisation which I think is a cult. What can I do? Some of the advice here is relevant to dissuading someone who is just becoming involved. Some of it is relevant if you know someone who is deeply involved. Mostly, the focus is on gentle dissuasion: when someone is involved very deeply with a cult, there is no substitute for an experienced exit-counsellor.
  • Dos and Don'ts - Some advice for those with loved ones involved in a religious cult.
  • FWBO Files - Culture of Cults - Religious organisations and movements are free to practice their religion as they choose, subject to the laws of the land. In practice, this means that cults, in promoting their religious beliefs and gaining adherents, are free to use deception, misrepresentation, psychological coercion or any other techniques which do not leave physical traces and are difficult to prove in a court of law. Initially using conventional marketing techniques, cults promote their particular belief systems. The trick is that through influencing a person's beliefs, it is possible to influence or indirectly control a person's mind. The actual controlling of mind is done by the person themselves, as they attempt to train and discipline their mind in accordance with the tenets of their new belief system. It is the belief system itself which is the primary active agent in cult mind control. Cult belief systems differ from conventional belief systems in a number of subtle but significant ways, which may not be apparent to an outsider. To understand the nature of these differences is to understand the nature of a cult.

If understood and supported appropriately, these experiences can be deeply transformative, offering the possibility of breakthrough rather than breakdown.

  • Carol Giambalvo's Cult Information Recovery - Carol Giambalvo’s interest in cults and thought reform began in 1978 when her step-daughter began exhibiting a drastic personality change following becoming a devotee in ISKCON. She began researching cults and thought reform and lectured in local high schools, churches and civic organizations. The more information she gathered on the indoctrination processes and thought reform used in cults, the more concerns arose about her involvement in est and The Hunger Project. In 1983, she and her husband, Noel, left their associations with est, The Hunger Project and Sterling Institute and began a personal search for information to aid their recovery process. Since 1984, Carol has done exit counseling and writing in the field, as well as serving as director with several organization’s boards, organizing and conducting recovery workshops and working with hundreds of people who have walked away from destructive cults.

  • Hartford Institute - Many religious sites on the web deal with what are commonly called cults. There are many misconceptions about these religious communities and the dynamics of joining and leaving such groups. Several sociologists of religion have very good sites and articles devoted to educating the public about new religious movements. This section contains links to what we consider to be the best of these sites.

In spite of the difficulties which it met to define the phenomenon being the subject of its study and to measure it, it appeared to the Commission that it conceals potentialities of expansion which must justify an increased vigilance on behalf of the public authorities

It fills an obvious gap of objective and rigorous information on the question of spirituality in our time. The integration of new expressions of spiritual search represents a challenge for our society. This challenge is at present taken up neither by authorities nor by the public at large. On the contrary, an odious campaign is going on to totally discredit spiritual commitment up to its very roots The CICNS provides a space for information and counseling to every person and movement concerned with freely awakening, nourishing and promoting spiritual search under all its legal forms. It also works on informing authorities and the public, and presents itself as a reliable partner on the question of today’s new spiritualities.

  • Religious Movements Homepage at the University of Virginia - This site was originally identified as the New Religious Movements Homepage, but the concept new has always been interpreted rather broadly. At some point, every religion was new. There are no exceptions. And every vital religion is more or less constantly experiencing movement from within and pressures from the outside to change and adapt. Thus, movement activity is ubiquitous to all religions, and the concept religious movement is central to scholarly inquiry about religion. While the focus of this site is on new religions, our concern with the processes of change and development leads us to an examination of groups that are older than the major Western monotheistic traditions, and some that are so new that they have few members and appear to exist primarily as web sites. We also explore groups that are not really religions, but have characteristics that are very much like religions. Scholars typically identify them as quasi-religions, or para-religious organizations.
  • Cult Awareness & Information Centre - Both Cults & Isms are listed here. Not every group mentioned on this site is considered a destructive cult. Some are 'benign isms' - different but not emotionally or socially destructive. Even cults vary in their degree of destructiveness. The information about benign groups is provided because we have received more than five inquiries about those groups. There is bound to be information you will not agree with, however it is our conviction that the public should have access to alternative information before deciding whether to participate in any particular group. If they want to know what your group teaches they can ask you directly. Why provide information about cults? A goldfish living in a bowl that is painted black on the outside will never know it lives in a bowl unless someone takes it out and shows it the rest of the world. Mindsets can be like that - locked into a `thinking box', unable to see outside because the web of beliefs is so all-encompassing

Represent the member associations in their contacts with the European institutions in the framework of their defence of families, individuals and democratic societies against the activities of harmful sectarian organisations. Alert public authorities and international institutions in the event of punishable activities. Participate in the creation of a European legal area with regard to sectarian issues. Create an international information network. Research and study the legal field of sectarian deviations.
  • Thought Reform and the Psychology of Totalism - The Demand for Purity In the thought reform milieu, as in all situations of ideological totalism, the experiential world is sharply divided into the pure and the impure, into the absolutely good and the absolutely evil. The good and the pure are of course those ideas, feelings, and actions which are consistent with the totalist ideology and policy; anything else is apt to be relegated to the bad and the impure. Nothing human is immune from the flood of stern moral judgments. All taints and poisons which contribute to the existing state of impurity must be searched out and eliminated. By Robert Jay Lifton, M.D.
  • Independent Reachout Trust article - WHY DO PEOPLE JOIN AND WHY IS IT HARD TO LEAVE? People join usually out of curiosity, and lured by claims to provide methods of Yoga, meditation for peace of mind, and general wellbeing. Why is it difficult to leave? First, it must be said that many do leave quite quickly and easily because it does not fit the 'yoga and candles' type of image they may have expected. There is too much study for many, but a long-term student may find it hard to shake off or replace the belief system - it is very convincing. A student believes that to abandon the system will ensure they are trapped in an eternal repeating life cycle of misery and hardship. All other faiths will have been discredited. Hobbies and general interests may have been lost, relationships may have been lost or badly damaged. The student is likely to feel he/she knows a deep dark truth about the immediate future, but has no one to confide in, or even take them seriously.
  • Cult News - Rick Ross - This news page is about groups, organizations or movements, which may have been called cults and/or cult-like in some way, shape or form. But not all groups called either cults or cult-like are harmful. Instead, they may be benign and generally defined as simply people intensely devoted to a person, place or thing. Therefore, the discussion or mention of a group, organization or person on this page, is not necessarily meant pejoratively.

  • New Cult Awareness Network - The New Cult Awareness Network is a mediatory organization. There are two senses in which we fulfill this role: :i. We gather useful knowledge and the best sources for help and information to freely distribute to the general public and the media --- in other words, we are the go-between for quality professionals, their research and the public; :ii. We are a neutral source of support, compassion and insight standing between conflicting parties --- in this respect, we are similar to professional mediators in the legal & social spheres (except our services are free). While there are an abundance of self-proclaimed anti-cultists and counter-cultists —organizations as well as individuals— with various agendas they try to promote at any cost, our only “agenda” is to help bring people together and keep families, and therefore society strong regardless of religious differences and by any legal, ethical means available to us.

Scientology is not Christian and holds that spiritual benefits may be realized in the present life.
  • The Reliability of Apostate Testimony - The above analysis clearly shows that while there is a certain incidence of apostasy in new religious movements, the overwhelming majority of people who disengage themselves from these non-conforming religions harbor no lasting ill-will toward their past religious associations and activities. While they frankly acknowledge the ways their religious needs and hopes were disappointed, they were able to realize some positive meaning and value from their past experiences. By contrast, there is a much smaller number of apostates who are deeply invested in discrediting if not destroying the religious communities that once claimed their loyalties. In most cases, these apostates were either forcibly separated from their religious community through the intervention of family members and anti-cult groups, or soon came under the influence of anti-cult groups and literature after their own voluntary defection from a new religious group.

There is evidence that such encounters can have profound benefits for those who experience them, for their neighbors, and for the world. CSP has a twofold mission: to identify and develop approaches to primary religious experience that can be used safely and effectively, and to help individuals and spiritual communities bring the insights, grace, and joy that arise from direct perception of the divine into their daily lives. The Council on Spiritual Practices has no doctrine or liturgy of its own.

  • Sex Is Not Compulsory - Extracts from Sex Is Not Compulsory by Liz Hodgkinson. Sphere Books, London 1988. It has been said that there is nothing so powerful as an idea whose time has come, and it seems that celibacy is now due for a reappraisal in a positive light. We are becoming sated with sex, which screams at us from all the media, and are ready to think about relating to people in a different way, which may be non-physical. Celibacy, of course, is not in itself a novel idea. It has an ancient and honourable tradition, and in most societies up until our present times has been held in higher regard than sexual activity, as something people could aspire to. Celibacy was seen in the past as conferring special powers and wisdom on its adherents.
  • Spirit of Change on Dadi Janki - A Brief Life History. Born in 1916 to a philanthropic family of very high moral and religious standing, one of Dadi Janki’s earliest memories is of chanting the name of God as she was rocked in her cradle. Her whole childhood reflects a deep love for God, as well as an unswerving desire to serve humanity. From the start, Dadi’s parents were determined to raise her in an atmosphere free of materialism. For the first 10 years of her life, Dadi’s education was through a private tutor and based solely on the study of religious scriptures. Dadi’s formal education — the study of basic learning skills — began only afterwards, when she spent a scant three years attending public school before going, at her insistence and with her parents’ blessings, on an extended tour of India’s many holy sites. She was 14 years old. Traveling with her father, Dadi met with all the foremost gurus, sages and saints of the day. She approached them all with the same query, “Who is God? Where is He? How can I find Him? How can I experience Him?” This intense search for God was relieved only by her intense devotion to charity. Even as a young child, Dadi was always going out to serve to the poor and needy in surrounding villages. Dadi was 19 years old when she met Brahma Baba, the founder of the Brahma Kumaris World Spiritual University. She describes that first encounter as a “recognition.” At first sight, Dadi simply “knew” that here was the instrument of the Divine that she had been seeking. She not only heard the truth from this man but she says she saw in his behavior and felt in his presence the source of truth itself. A few years later, Dadi herself became part of the Brahma Kumaris institution, surrendering her life to God.
  • Islamic Voice on BKWSU. Does Islam Permit Meditation? - It is the third stage of meditation that is dangerous. The meditator is brainwashed into believing in the philosophy of the Guru leading him in the meditation. Nowhere is this transformation phenomenon more visible than in Brahmakumari Ashrams who teach meditations, they call Rajyoga. In their meditations, the subject is asked to concentrate on a small red bulb ahead. In the background above is a picture or sketch of Brahmakumari founder Baba Lekhraj referred to as Brahma Baba in their vocabulary. This sketch also resides in the subconscious of the person in trance. There are scientifically designed lighting effects and after a while the whispering suggestions of Didi (the teacher at the Ashram is a lady called Didi) reverberate in the mind of the person in meditation. He listens and takes to the suggestions gradually. Then he is asked and taught to repeat those ideas and suggestions of Brahmakumari faith himself over and over again, while meditating. This is the process of self-hypnosis and autosuggestion. True it gives peace of mind and consequently heals many a disease but I have met scientists and engineers at Brahmakumari centers who start believing absurdities like the life cycle of the world is 5000 years and same events repeat after every 5000 years with same persons. Even the doctors among them start believing that in Kaliyuga (after about 30 years hence, according to them) the conceptions in the wombs will be possible by Yoga-Bal (the power of meditation) and the conjugal relationship or male sperms will no more be needed for childbirth.
  • Victoria Mary Clarke on meeting Dadi Janki - Dadi Janki is eighty eight. She's old, she's unmarried and doesn't have any kids. Apart from this, she's penniless, she's short, she doesn't speak English and to cap it all, she has a full moustache. Not simply a few stray hairs in that area, (as many of us have), -hairs that could be bleached,- but a full, black moustache. Undisguisable. In the normal run of things, Dadi Janki would be at the bottom of the ladder of status in our society. Given a choice, who wouldn't rather be young and beautiful than old and grey? In a world where youth and beauty are prized above all other things, most of us (male and female) will definitely dye our hair and will probably give in to Botox. So the very fact that Dadi has the audacity to sit here and be photographed for a newspaper without having made any effort to look glamorous must make her either senile and a bit touched, or totally eccentric.
  • The Brahma Kumaris as a ‘reflexive Tradition’ - Raja Yoga was reinterpreted and a milieu of reinterpretation came into being, to ‘suit a world affirming cultic milieu (elaboration), such as the ongoing globalisation, New Age-ification and instrumentalisation of the original, world-rejecting theodicy. As a movement the Brahma Kumaris predate the New Age movement, but over the years the Brahma Kumaris have developed characteristics that link them to New Age thinking proper. Walliss points out in chapter III ‘From World-Rejection to Ambivalence: A Genealogy of the Brahma Kumaris’, how the Brahma Kumaris developed and got their recent characteristics which, in his view, legitimise the choice to designate them as ‘reflexive’. The author gets it wrong next but then he is only an academic. The Brahma Kumaris were founded by Dada Lekhraj, who is considered by members to be ‘the incarnation and descent of God, the World Father, into the corporeal world’ (p. 33). He was born at Sindh in 1876 as a member of the Kripani family, the members of which usually were devotees of the Vallabhasampradaya.

  • Kundaliniyoga Tribe - Brahma Kumaris... topic posted Tue, June 27, 2006 - 1:55 PM by Shekinah Does anyone have any experience with them? A very good friend of mine and mentor when I was a teenager (and reiki teacher) is now a Brahma Kumaris. They teach their own version of Raja Yoga (meditation) and run a worldwide spiritual education school. On the outside they seem to be a great group doing wonderful things (and they do) however, my instincts have picked up on some things about them, that have irked me, such as their sense of celibate superiority (they beleive sex is bad, and impure/not innocent) and altho primarily matriarchal in power structure, are patriarchal in their main beleif in deity (altho they claim otherwise...but God is always referred to in the masculine, as God, or Father etc...never Goddess...rarely mother ...tho they may say *mother aspect* or something like that) When I asked them questions on their sex-beliefs they ignored me....same thing when I asked them about their separated mens and womens circles in reference to their belief that the soul is genderless.....I had asked if they would allow a transgender/gender variant person to attend either of the bi-gendered groups...the local SF group said then ones born male should attend the male group...the MAIN organization said they could go to whatever group they felt most inclined towards...) Interesting ... Anyone have an experience with them?
  • State of Hinduism today - BKWSU is less controversial than many other NRMs but has been criticized for its evangelical activity under the guise of social work, and for the damaging effects of celibacy upon family life.

  • Raja Yoga taught at Royal College of Psychiatrists - Newsletter No. 5; Sitting comfortably I begin to observe my mind. I can see many thoughts coming into my mind: thoughts about the day, thoughts of other people, and thoughts about my own activity. Now I begin to step back from these thoughts and watch them. I then choose to let these thoughts go. Each one is not important to me at the moment - they are just passing through. Gradually they slow down. My mind begins to be quiet. The quiet spaces between each thought grow. I become more aware of the silence that there is before a thought even begins. In this silence I begin to experience a deep sense of peace. Peaceful thoughts and peaceful feelings come into my mind. I am aware that I am peaceful energy, a peaceful being. As I focus on myself I begin to feel very relaxed and light. I am just flowing peaceful energy. I am very still… floating away…like a tiny star in a sea of peace. Waves of peace wash over me and through me… I feel I have reached a very quiet and still place, the home of the mind. This place is like a beautiful silent room where I can just slow down, be myself and be free. This is a very special room because it has no walls, or ceiling or floor … it is just light and peace. This is my home where there is no fear, just peace. As I feel comfortable here in silence, I may become aware of another presence. This is a very benevolent, loving presence that is filling me with beautiful good feelings and refreshing my tired old thoughts. I come to know this supreme energy as my friend, a constant source in an ever-changing world.

  • Sex Is Not Compulsory - Extracts from Sex Is Not Compulsory by Liz Hodgkinson. Sphere Books, London 1988

By the power of the composure of the semen, one will become just like Myself. - Sri Sankaracharya

In the thought reform milieu, as in all situations of ideological totalism, the experiential world is sharply divided into the pure and the impure, into the absolutely good and the absolutely evil.
