Maya

In Hinduism Maya is the world of illusion - anything associated with matter, or even the differentiation of spirit, is seen as "maya" and as false. The BK teachings tend to personify Maya as a siren or a thief or an undesirable person - but really they are referring to the human weaknesses, the vices. Like the Christian or Judaic Devil, or Satan, or the Hindu Ravan (which also appears frequently in BK teachings), Maya is not an actual being, but an archetype, a personification of impurity.

  • The Brahma Kumaris believe Maya is an illusion created by the five vices: anger, greed, lust, ego and attachment. Attachment is seen as a human weakness.
  • Maya is also seen as an illusion, delusion, unreality, temptation, and a force that takes souls away from God.
